Mrs. Joy McFadyen, Ms. Laurie Jeske, Mrs. Melissa Nixon,
Mrs. Melinda Howard,
Fifth grade is the year students prepare to transition to Middle School. Our Hampton students need to take their work very seriously. Academic standards required by the District and the State help students achieve and learn the required curriculum. Homework is required on time so that students can practice and master skills, and move ahead to new skills. Our students ARE our future, so we encourage them to be responsible individuals.
Math:
- Math journal with required objectives
- Accelerated Math (our computer program which reinforces required standards and objectives)
- Math games (Have your child teach you how to play them to reinforce their learning.)
Language Arts:
- Reading curriculum includes reading in different genres and comparing Literature.
- Accelerated Reader (AR)-Students are expected to read at home a minimum of 20 minutes a day at their own reading level to help improve comprehension skills. By reading this often, students will be able to complete their AR goal each month.
- Writing is an important part of our curriculum, including research and narrative writing.
- Spelling and Language will be graded in both the context of the students’ writing, and in addition to skill practice.
Science:
- Diversity of Life (cells, plant reproduction, organization of living things)
- Weather and Atmosphere
- Wetlands (Our field trips support our grade level standards.)
Social Studies:
- United State history—From Native American life through the American Revolution, and the beginning of our Nation
- Geography
- Government, Civics, and Persuasive Essay
- Economics
Regular special events for our 5th graders (barring changes) include:
- Camp Timbers is our Outdoor education experience. It is also a celebration for completing Elementary school. Fundraising for this event includes a bowl-a-thon (in place of Halloween activities that the younger students do), a candle sale (around Christmas), and a candy sale.
- Track Meet: All 5th grade classes will compete in this event. It’s a lot of fun.
- Field Day (usually the last day of school)
- Fifth grade picture (all 3 classes together)
